Lake Joseph Centre, August 6, 2011- CNIB and Lake Joe hosted a special Lions appreciation event to thank the Lions of Multiple District "A" for their 50 years of service to the camp.

The event was well attended by Lions and their families, representing almost each district that helped make Lake Joe a reality five decades ago.

The day was filled with fun, laughter and thanks. Lions enjoyed site tours, pontoon boat cruises, canoe rides, swimming, and a special yester-era picture tour and BBQ by Lion Jack Elzinga a.k.a. "The Flying Dutchman", who traveled from Kingston, Ontario for the occasion.

Steve Lutz unveils the ‘Walkway to Independence’

CNIB Vice President, Steve Lutz unveiled the "Walkway to Independence" and even surprised some of our Lions with a special "Salt of the Earth" brick, honouring Lions who have made significant and meaningful contributions with their time and efforts to Lake Joe over many years.

A new annual tradition! CNIB and the District Governors will honour a Lion annually from each district on Lions appreciation day at Lake Joe. The recipients will receive a "Salt of the Earth" brick in their names to be displayed on the Walkway to Independence.

The afternoon ended with a commemorative plaque presented to the Lions International Clubs Multiple District "A" and a special tribute dedicated to Lion Ray Trudel, of Barrhaven Lions Club, who passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. Lion Ray was remembered for his unwavering commitment to the camp, and its clients. A plaque with the tribute read on the day remains at camp to remind guests and visitors of the contributions of this Lion.

The day was a huge success and it could not have been possible without the longstanding commitment of the Lions and their families, and the hard work of our staff and volunteers.

Thank you for your dedication and unwavering support to CNIB and Lake Joe over the last 50 years. Your outstanding commitment has helped fulfill the lives of people living with vision loss. Thank you for helping our clients see beyond vision loss.
